On this week’s Dropout Nation Podcast, RiShawn Biddle observes the recriminations from the American Federation of Teachers’ Chicago local over the Second City’s layoff of 1,036 teachers — along with more than 1,000 other staffers — and explains how the union is failing to admit its role in the workforce reduction. From its own lax oversight of the pension over which it has majority control, to its defense of seniority-based policies that hurt children and good-to-great teachers, the Chicago Teachers Union and its president, Karen Lewis, have much for which to take responsibility. And this is true for other AFT and National Education Association affiliates throughout the nation.
