Indeed, I say some of those same things about ‘those students’ and ‘those parents’ at lunch and at happy hour, but when that child steps into my classroom my commitment and expectations are as if they were my own.
I embrace the phrase ‘in loco parentis’, pass on the same gifts to my students that were given (or in many cases sledgehammered and pile-driven) to me by my parents and those scary, demanding nuns and priests!
