When I taught in the junior high school in Berkeley in the late 1960's, we had tracking. You can imagine who was in the upper track and in the lower, as Berkeley was a diverse urban setting. I taught both levels and will never forget the parents of my students in the lower track telling me not to lower standards, not to go easy on their kids, but to demand excellence and push their children to learn and thrive. Urban parents are like everyone else, it seemed to me then and still does. They want good education and will seek it out when they can.
